One nice day last summer my father and I decided to go fishing.
I realized my son would be 9 years old this year and he had never been fishing, let alone caught a fish in his life; my poor pops must be turning over in his grave. He passed away in 2012 at the not-too-old age of 63. My son was only 4 years old at the time, so although he remembers him, he never got the chance to really know him. At almost exactly the same time, I spot it.
I flagged down the operator and he drew up alongside. The wind was so fierce we could barely hear each other, but he agreed to tow me to the boat landing where he was heading. That was the first boat I’d seen on that secluded end of the lake. My identity as a non-native Minnesotan “looking in” is strongly defined by what happens on fishing opener. I get one day a year to prove to myself, and everyone else, that I belong here.
Then I wandered around into different spots. Finally I dropped my line right into a school of perch. Between us we caught over thirty perch in less than a half hour. In the excitement the lunch blew into the river, as we had just about started to eat when I found the school of fish. The sea gulls happened to be very plentiful at this point.
New story, new characters, new map, new mechanics such as upgraded hunting and fishing, great visuals, amazingly well written and lovable protagonist, a huge chunk of details that no other game on the market has, great dynamic weather, etc.

When somebody brags about catching a huge record breaking trophy fish, and then throwing it back into the sea.
Our very own Fishing Coach Matt Lanier won a fishing tournament last week… He put his head down and started to walk down the beach with his dog. Beach from the shore line to the access paths back to the cottages. I’ve only told this story to the immediate family. I shook the tragedy from my mind as I entered the dark swirling water. Ever so slowly I waded out to chest level and proceeded the hundred yards to my spot.
