From fishing stories to how-to guides and everything in between, fishermen find connections in humor, self-help and tragedy in ways never thought before. Long winter nights are the perfect time for a deep dive into books on the subject, both to nourish the soul and perhaps learn a new technique.

One spring, Zeke planted blueberry bushes in his meadow. A week later, he went to check their progress and found that some beavers had built a dam that put a pond over the new planting. Whether it’s a bluegill, crappie, catfish, bass or carp, each catch is like his first. I took my son out fishing when he was five years old. After a while of catching some nice smallmouth, my son told me he needed to go “number two”. So I told him to hold on while I reeled in my line. I looked over at him and he was already going “number two” in my rear livewell. I have always held deep respect and appreciation for folklore.
The squirrel was desperately trying all of his acrobatic gyrations in an effort to reach the nuts. Just as he grabbed them, he lost his grip and fell into the water. Instantly the biggest fish the man had ever seen lunged up and swallowed the squirrel. Then the big fish jumped up out of the water and put the two nuts back on the stump.
Each letter is filled with a beautiful illustration that can be recognized and comprehended. As children get older they can read and learn more and enhance their fishing excursions. And in line with that, here’s something I want to correct. I thought about waiting for the rain to stop, but then decided the rain was what I needed. It was a Sunday morning, and if I was going to break into a house or building to find warmth, and mercy help me, something to steal and sell at a pawn shop, it was as good a time and as good a cover as any. Trevor fell off the bar stool and lay on the floor with his knees pulled up.
The night was still and the lack of any visible moon lost in the fog gave it a darker than black feel. So I have divided my list into a baker’s dozen categories with a few select books in each. I end with a category of books I have yet to read but are “musts.” I will be posting the list in a series of five installments. This first installment focuses on the category “Best Literature.” I hope you enjoy perusing my choices, and would welcome hearing of any additions you may have.
