All I know is at some point I ended up outside the reserve, back where we started. I rolled over onto my stomach and screamed. Five bodies below me, all staring up in differing states of grotesqueness. One nearly torn apart, his muscles and organs exposed. Within a second, I was encased in a black, fleshy, watery coffin. A red, scallop-shaped tail the size of a sewer grate swirled through the water above it before it disappeared.
Lost in thought, the ground below me suddenly gave way, and I sank past my nose. Sputtering, I kicked off and forced myself to tread. I stroked through the water, looking around for the others…but they were still walking, the water at their chests. And within a few seconds, my feet met submerged ground once more.
I was walking what I thought was the shore line and made a few casts for about 30 minutes. I turned my back to light a cigarette and realized I was on a sand bar in the middle of the river with the tide starting to cover my exit. I got off thankfully and went strait home for the night. I was getting my boat ready on my own dock with my friend, Rex. I loaded up all my gear and bait, took the rope off the mooring post and headed up to one of my secret fishing spots. The swampy smell filled my nose when we powered up the river .when we reached the spot, we powered down the motor and tossed in the anchor.
